Returning Students

Returning Student Support

Returning after a pause is common. Schools increasingly have offices and processes built for students like you. Here is how to approach the return step by step.

Readmission and reentry

Many colleges require a readmission form for students who have been away for a set number of terms. Some have dedicated reentry advisors who review your history and suggest a plan.

Revisiting financial aid

Your aid eligibility may have changed since you last enrolled. Completing a new FAFSA for the upcoming year and speaking with the aid office helps you understand current options. Prior aid history, such as satisfactory academic progress, can affect what is available, and many schools have appeal processes.

  • File a current FAFSA for the relevant award year
  • Ask about satisfactory academic progress appeals if needed
  • Request a summary of any prior aid used

Academic credit planning

Ask for a degree audit or credit evaluation. Some schools award credit for prior learning, work experience, or exams, which can shorten the remaining path and reduce cost.

Questions to ask

  1. Do I need to reapply or submit a readmission form?
  2. Is there an advisor dedicated to returning students?
  3. Do you offer credit for prior learning?
  4. How does my previous academic standing affect aid now?
