Degree Funding Basics

Understanding what finishing will actually cost is the foundation of any funding plan. This page explains how to estimate remaining expenses and where to research help.

Estimate your remaining expenses

Multiply the credits you still need by the current per-credit rate, then add required fees, books, and any balance you may owe. This gives you a working number to discuss with the aid office.

  • Remaining credits multiplied by per-credit tuition
  • Mandatory fees per term
  • Books, materials, and technology
  • Any prior balance that must be resolved

Adult learner scholarships

Many scholarships specifically welcome adult, part-time, or returning learners. Read each sponsor's requirements directly, and be cautious of any service that charges a fee to find or guarantee scholarships.

State and employer support

Some states fund programs for adults finishing degrees, and many employers offer tuition assistance. Check your state higher education agency and your employer's benefits documents for current terms.

Questions to ask

  1. What is the current per-credit tuition rate for my program?
  2. Are there scholarships reserved for adult or part-time students?
  3. Does my state offer funding for near-completers?
  4. Is a payment plan available for remaining costs?
